2006-11-13 - 9:40 p.m. I was told the other day that 1200 people a month are moving into Edmonton. Please stop. Unless you are moving here to find an exciting, low-paid career somewhere in the service industry, I, for one, would be happy if you just stayed away. I'm sorry to seem unwelcoming or un-neighborly, but this city is becoming ridiculous. The traffic is stupid; the rents/housing prices are going up ridiculous amounts; and everywhere you go there are line-ups. And, well, I've just never been good with crowds and I'm feeling a bit crowded. But if you want to work in retail, by all means, come. Of course, you won't be able to pay your rent, but you'll have work. I stood in so many line-ups today. Home Depot - only one till open, probably somewhere between 15 and 20 people in line - I had time to read two and a half articles in Canadian Living in the time it took. The retail staff these days are either kids that don't care about anything or older staff that care too much, but don't move too quickly anymore. If you're breathing, they'll hire you here. I think they are doing recruiting drives in senior's residences and sheltered workshops now. Do I sound bitter? I feel bitter. It's because I had four days off and a good chunk of my time that could have been better spent reading or napping was spent doing errands that used to take half the time they do now. I am looking forward to Christmas shopping with horror. I meant to start this weekend, but just didn't have the time or energy. I think I'm going to need to do some serious planning this year so I can accomplish it with a minimum of stress. And what's with the stupid weather? It snowed all day. I never want to go to flamenco class (though I enjoy it once I'm there), but the roads were just so shitty, I was a wuss and didn't go. No such luck with work tomorrow.
